6 Family Halloween Costume Ideas
We LOVE doing family Halloween costumes and we always make them DIY family Halloween costumes vs buying them from the store. I just have so much more fun making them our own! But ever since Ava was born, we’ve always done family Halloween costumes and while pregnant, have always found great characters that make pretty great pregnant Halloween costumes too! So here’s a round up of all of our DIY costumes from Ava’s first Halloween until now…
And yes, we’ve got this year’s costumes picked out already too — Ava chose them ;) But no, we aren’t a family of cacti like the last time we gave Ava the full responsibility of choosing our costumes. Although those did turn out to be pretty epic and comfortable at that!
I will link the original blog posts as many have lots of links to the items we used too if you’re looking!
6 Family Halloween Costume Ideas
Little Red Riding Hood Family Halloween Costumes
In 2016 my Mother in Law made Ava a DIY little red riding hood costume, I was the grandma and Frank was the wolf. Easy peasy costumes!
101 Dalmatians Family Halloween Costumes
This year Frank said he didn’t want to wear a onesie like me so I just had this shirt handmade for him and it worked out perfectly for being part of the theme but not having to wear an adult onesie ;) However, I was super comfy so that was perfect for me! We even made Baxter a dalmatian! But the best costume of all was of course Ava’s baby Cruella De Vil costume — black dress, white fur coat, gloves and a necklace and I even spray died her hair. She was just the cutest!
Monsters Inc. Family Halloween Costumes
Our Monster’s Inc Family Halloween costumes always get the most attention, even to this day! I am forever asked about our costumes here and besides purchasing Frank’s Sulley costume somewhere online (I can’t remember where), I DIY’d the rest of our costumes myself… all with hot glue!
Ava’s Boo costume is a purple kids hoodie and then I found that purple fabric at the fabric store and glued it onto the sweatshirt with stuffing inside. Her teeth were glued on felt pieces and her hair was a mini mop, just like in the movie. And then lastly, the sleeves were another fabric I bought at the fabric store and glued right on.
My pregnant Mike Wazowski costume was super easy — lime green leggings and a long sleeve shirt with felt pieces cut out and glued on for his eyeball. And then his mouth was just a black fanny pack with white felt pieces cut out and glued on for the teeth!
See - you don;t have to have any sewing skills to DIY some family Halloween costumes ;)
Cactus Family Halloween Costumes
This was the year Ava really wanted to be a family of cacti for Halloween (I think because we had just re-done her big girl room and one of the decorations was that big cactus you see in this photo!). So we went with it and I DIY’d this one too! I bought adult green onesies and kids green pajamas (which were super comfy by the way, highly recommend for Halloween ) and then cut out little white pieces of yarn, cut tiny little holes all over the onesies and simply tied them on. And then I added a little flower headband for Ava and that’s all there was to it!
The Little Mermaid Family Halloween Costumes
This was the year I was pregnant with Hayes and was due after Halloween. So we actually had a little stuffed animal flounder in his place for our costumes but when he decided to arrive early, I quickly made him a DIY baby flounder costume and it turned out so cute! I linked a bunch of stuff we bought for these costumes at that link below if you need them too so just click that if you’re looking for anything we’re wearing!
Peter Pan Family Halloween Costumes
And then last years costumes were definitely a favorite for all of us and if you’re looking for anything we’re wearing, I think 99% of it came from Amazon and I linked every single item at that link below too! Super easy to make and I think they turned out so fun!!
